College entrance exams attempt to measure your math, verbal, analytical, and writing skills. Many four-year colleges and universities use these tests. Certain community and technical colleges also require ACT scores or SAT scores, especially if you plan to enroll in a program that prepares students to transfer to a four-year school.

During your senior year, you will finalize your college choice. This year is filled with admission applications, scholarship essays, financial aid information and the need to meet deadlines. Throughout your senior year, continue to build your resume by achieving academic success, as well as participating in extracurricular activities. Colleges are very interested in well-rounded students.

Many families are shocked by a college's sticker price. While the price of tuition can be overwhelming, college financial aid can make higher education affordable.

In fact, income and savings represent only a few of the resources families use to pay students' college expenses, according to the 2020 Sallie Mae survey How America Pays for College. The survey found that for a typical family, scholarships and grants covered 25% of college costs in 2019-20. There are several items to complete on the high school senior checklist before high school graduation, one of which is finding scholarships to help pay for college. Although you may have been granted admission to your dream college, you still may need to cover the rest of your college dues if you didn't land a full-tuition scholarship or your financial aid doesn't foot the entire bill. Scholarships are an excellent way to supplement the cost of tuition, room and board, books, and other expenses, especially since they don't ever have to be paid back.
